What, really? I hear you say. This is one of the many shocking facts that are included in our Vivid Sydney installation.

This year at Circular Quay we have created a large lighting installation named Habit/at that will challenge the visitors to make changes.  Shaped as a discarded plastic bottle lid, inside the walls are covered with plastic bags with information boards sharing various facts such as;

  • Humans have created 8.3 billion metric tonnes of plastics since large-scale production of the synthetic materials began in the early 1950s.
  • It is estimated up to 5 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year, this is almost 10 million plastic bags per minute. If tied together, all these plastic bags could be wrapped around the world seven times every hour.
  • Half of all plastic produced is designed to be used only once

The information boards were made from wood to reduce the impact of the installation.

This World Environment Day, we encourage you to visit our installation and pledge what you can do to change your habits to reduce plastic consumption. If you are not in Sydney, check out the posts on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, and share your top tips on reducing plastic.

This installation is a collaboration between Cundall, Plenary GroupRichard CrookesOnelight Australia and Top Knot Carpentry.
