As someone who is passionate about minimising my own carbon footprint and being fortunate enough to have a job where I can help others to do the same, I’m finding Adelaide quite an exciting place to be right now as there is a clear ambition for it to become the world’s first Carbon Neutral City!
And what a bold ambition it is! In 2015, Adelaide’s emissions totalled over 951,000 tonnes. Taking up this challenge, over 40 businesses, organisations and individuals have committed to helping achieve carbon neutrality through the Carbon Neutral Adelaide Partner Program. The program was launched in May at an event by Environment Minister Ian Hunter and Lord Mayor Martin Haese and aims to have one million square metres of city floor space committed to lowering carbon emissions by 2020.
Cundall is one of the founding partners of the Carbon Neutral Adelaide Partner Program. We are excited to provide as much support as we can and we feel like the State Government and City of Adelaide are going about it in exactly the right way by engaging the community to share in the vision. As a One Planet Company, Cundall as a business already has targets to work towards Zero Carbon and we are assisting clients from across the country to reduce their own environmental impact. Fully supporting the Carbon Neutral Adelaide Partner Program is a natural step for us.
South Australia is already making the transition to a low carbon economy, however the community needs to collaborate, share ideas and be fully engaged in the collective ambition to really achieve carbon neutrality. In the pipeline, we are working with CitySwitch to provide every signatory one of our ‘Beyond Reports’ free of charge. These provide key ideas and inspiration, based on our One Planet Living experience, to those in office tenancies to help find ways in which to further reduce their environmental impact.
Our Adelaide team have just moved to a new location to support the expansion of our business, and to lead by example we have adopted many WELL principles in the tenancy fit-out design. We have chosen a space with great natural lighting and when the sun goes down (or behind a cloud) our specialist lighting designers, Light4, have designed a highly controllable office lighting solution which provides light exactly where it is needed at less than 3W/m².
I am looking forward to hearing what other businesses and community members are doing and I believe this initiative will help grow the city’s economy and make Adelaide a destination of choice for investment and even eco-tourism. Cundall has the engineering expertise that will help businesses across many sectors reduce their carbon footprint, this is an opportunity for us and others in the industry and something me and my colleagues welcome.
