In October, Cundall was nationally rewarded for its Leadership and People Development at the Constructing Excellence Awards 2015. This award recognised all of the great things that we have been doing to help our people to develop, allowing them to take on wider responsibilities and new roles within the partnership.

So why did we enter the award?  Well that is simple really, the partnership has changed beyond recognition in recent years, at the heart of this change is our people and we could not have achieved all that we have without great people.  The partnership has stood by the principle to recruit the right ‘Cundall’ people with the necessary skills and experience and then to nurture and develop this talent.

Here are the five reasons why I believe Cundall’s approach has led us to win this national award:

  1. Communication

This maybe an obvious one, although one that is not always apparent when we are engrossed in our daily tasks. As engineers it is often said that we are not great at talking about our achievements, however this is something that we encourage at Cundall. From the formal quarterly briefings, where our teams share project images and our partners provide updates on developments, we also have ‘Cundall Snippets’, ‘Cundall Connect’, thought leadership where we engage with other industry leaders on a wide range of topics and promote conversations. Along with a dedicated staff forum, 10 at 10 meetings, desk to desk Lync facilities, know Joe and the like we really are a well-connected business!

  1. Professional Development

We take the development of all of our staff seriously. We have a structured, accredited professional development process which takes place outside of the appraisal process. It focuses on long-term career planning where staff are encouraged to map their professional progression with partners providing advice and sharing personal experiences.

We have a CPD programme for our engineers to stay abreast of new developments and industry legislation. Client care, networking skills, project management and staff management training is also offered to ensure that all staff are able to manage the technical, human and commercial aspects of their work.

  1. Benefits

We invest in our staff, and this means rewarding loyalty through our flexible benefits scheme and long service awards. We support and encourage staff in progressing professional qualifications, supporting further and higher education, and operating accredited training schemes. We encourage travel between our global offices to those that are flexible and willing, so there is genuinely the opportunity to sample life in a different country.

  1. Yearly graduate intake

We understand the importance of bringing newly qualified graduates into the industry. Our internal programme for graduates includes in-house seminars and briefings which provide the opportunity to share knowledge and learn about other disciplines to develop their careers.

  1. Passion

Cundall is a pretty special place to work, we have so many talented and committed people and we enjoy working together. Just by looking around the office you can see the depth of experience that we have working at Cundall and then you can start to think of the amazing projects that they have worked on, from data centers to leisure centers, from industrial facilities to operating theaters and from hotels to award winning offices – it is true to say that working with such great people is truly rewarding.

So how did we communicate this success and the importance of this national industry recognition to our staff? Well we announced it on our website, we tweeted and put it on linked in, we even put it on ‘Cundall Snippets’ but most importantly, in Birmingham, we took 10 minutes out, gathered the staff together and enjoyed a cream tea!
